The film is played at the museum and is not shown online, so here are the animation and some stills from it.

  • (About)

The golden horns from Gallehus were found near Møgeltønder, the first in 1639 and the second in 1734. In 1802 they were stolen from the royal Kunstkammer and melted down. The copies made in 1978 are shown at Kulturhistorie Tønder, a few kilometres from where the horns were found.

For the exhibition we made the full film that runs there, with interviews, footage from the museum and the landscape, hand drawn ink animation and macro shots of the horns. The animation tells of life in the Iron Age and the dark years that may be why the horns were buried.

(The animation)

Drawn by hand in ink: a raven in the storm, a farmer at the plough,
a village that goes dark and the horns as an offering.

(The golden horns)

The copies from 1978, filmed so close that every figure in the gold can be read.

(Behind the scenes)

We used a probe lens, a long and thin special lens, to get right up close to the details on the horns.
